Together and Alone

Hi CB,

Thanks for your comments! In mentioning the individual, I was referring to this Calvinistic, capitalistic idea of pulling oneself up by one's bootstraps, the self-made man, etc.

I am not comfortable with this idea of braving and conquering the frontier, the unknown, alone. I am not too hot on the conquering part either really, but I do not believe that is ever the truth. It would seem that in every case of someone being "self-made" there were those unnamed exploited people under their boot heels.

So, yes of course individual experience is important, whether for oneself, or to share. In this case, I felt that change can better be made through sharing our angels and demons. But don't hold me to it....I reserve the right to change my mind tomorrow!!

Who We Are:

LJ: A thirty-something graduate student at the University of Minnesota, Lisa lives for the dangerous dames of hard-boiled fiction and film noir. LLL:I find it difficult trying to sum myself up in a profile. I am complicated and often a mystery to myself (like most of us I think). I am a mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and most of all, a writer. Sometimes angry, often confused, and always pondering how the rest of us are getting on, I write to connect, to find out, to be in conversation. Credentials? Seer, Woodstock Nation citizen (still) and yes, I have an MFA (from The New School) in writing. So, per Marge Piercy, now I have a license to be an artist. It doesn’t change anything, but I always like when people look taken aback when they hear it, like they are surprised I got through school at all. Shocked the hell out of me I must admit.
